The fintech sector is moving fast. New technologies, regulations, and customer expectations are reshaping the way financial services are built and delivered. In this environment, innovation is no longer a “nice to have” – it’s a survival skill.
That’s where Spark Hackathon, organised by the Romanian Fintech Association (RoFintech), comes in. Taking place between 14 and 16th of November 2025, the event brings together developers, entrepreneurs, students, and industry professionals for an intense sprint of creativity and problem-solving.
More than Coding: A Launchpad for Ideas
At first glance, a hackathon looks like a coding competition. Teams form, brainstorm, and race against the clock to develop a prototype. But the real value lies beyond the lines of code:
- Hands-on learning – participants get to work with cutting-edge tools, APIs, and data sets, gaining skills that no classroom or online course can fully replicate.
- Networking and collaboration – students meet professionals, startups connect with potential partners, and fresh talent gets on the radar of established fintechs.
Testing the ecosystem – hackathons surface new ideas, stress-test assumptions, and sometimes even reveal the next startup success story.
How Spark Hackathon Works
The hackathon runs over a three-day intensive sprint, from November 14 to 16, 2025.
Participants form teams that include developers, entrepreneurs, and students who collaborate to brainstorm, design, and prototype solutions using provided APIs and datasets.
Throughout the event, mentorship and expert feedback help teams refine their projects. At the end, teams present their prototypes to a panel of judges from the fintech industry, and the best ideas receive recognition and prizes.
Why the Fintech Ecosystem Needs Hackathons
Fintech thrives on experimentation. Banks and regulators move carefully, but hackathons give innovators a safe space to test bold concepts quickly. This dynamic serves several purposes:
- Encouraging a culture of innovation – when young teams see their prototypes presented in front of industry experts, they gain confidence and momentum.
- Bridging the talent gap – Romania has strong technical talent, but connecting that talent with fintech use-cases is the missing piece. Spark Hackathon makes that connection possible.
- Accelerating adoption – prototypes developed here might turn into pilots, partnerships, or even startups that strengthen the local and regional fintech landscape.
This being the first edition of Spark Hackathon, the competition will award a cash prize to the winning team, motivating participants to bring their best ideas and solutions.
A Strategic Piece in Regional Fintech Growth
Spark Hackathon is a key initiative within Romania’s broader fintech innovation strategy, supporting the national goal of establishing a vibrant, dynamic fintech ecosystem. It also aligns with regional efforts to position Eastern Europe as a hub for fintech creativity and technology-driven financial services transformation.
A Call to Participate
By taking part in Spark Hackathon, you don’t just code for a weekend – you contribute to building the future of finance in Romania and beyond. Whether you’re a student eager to test your skills, a professional curious about emerging technologies, or a company scouting innovation, this is the place to be.
